Why you will love this Krispy Kreme donut recipe

Worthy of bakery: This Krispy Kreme donut recipe is completely perfect! From soft interiors to signature donut glaze, I make myself the impression of visiting a Krispy Kreme store.

Fresh and hot: You don’t have to wait for the “fresh and hot” panel to light up! Nothing beats the experience of enjoying these warm donuts. My favorite is when the frosting is still slightly sticky.

Budgetary: A dozen homemade donuts cost a fraction of what you would pay in the store!

Customizable: Although the classic recipe is celestial, you can easily change things. I like to do them with a chocolate frosting or dust the top of powdered sugar.

Ingredient notes

  • Instant yeast: A quick action agent. The active dry yeast launches the climb of the dough, guaranteeing soft donuts.
  • Hot water: Activates yeast, which will make it ferment and produce CO2, which increases the donuts.
  • Whole milk: Provides wealth and creamy and gives the dough a tender texture and a slightly sweet flavor. I tried this recipe with 2%, and it was simply not the same, so stay in full fat!
  • Powdered sugar: Nourish yeast and softens the dough.
  • Salt: To improve the global flavor.
  • Eggs: Add wealth and humidity and help bind the ingredients with a soft texture similar to a cake.
  • Butter: For a rich and buttered taste. I used unical butter to better control the flavor.
  • Versatile flour: Gives donuts their shape and texture.
  • Vegetable or canola oil: Hot oil is used for frying. Select a neutral flavor oil for the best results. You can also use olive oil, but make sure it is light or refined for the best flavor.
  • Sugar confectioners, vanilla and milk extract: Mix to make the classic Krispy Kreme frosting. Sugar adds softness and vanilla brings an additional complexity of flavors. The milk adjusts the consistency of the frosting for a perfect dip and a drizzle. Sometimes I also add a small almond extract for flavor.

How to make Krispy Kreme donuts

Doing these homemade fried donuts can take time, but fortunately, the steps are easy to follow. As a bonus, the process makes my house feel like a donut store!

1. Activate yeast. Activate the dry yeast and combine it with lukewarm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it is sparkling.

2. Warm milk. Reheat the milk. I heat it in the microwave and let it cool to lukewarm.

3. Mix the ingredients. In a bowl to mix, mix the cooled milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter and 2 cups of flour with the yeast mixture. Mix until smooth consistency. I use my stand mixer to make things even easier!

4. Add flour. Gradually mix 3 cups of flour. Drill with a hook of dough for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.

5. Let the dough rise. Place the dough in a covered and greased bowl. Let it go up in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours until they double.

6. Cut the dough. Gently roll the levy dough at a thickness of 1/4 inch. I use a donut cutter to shape, restart the remains if necessary.

7. Rest paste. Place the donuts and donut holes cut on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Cover and rest for 10 to 15 minutes.

8. Fry donuts. Heat 3 inches of oil in a deep saucepan or a deep fryer at 375 degrees. Then fry the donuts on batches for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels so that there is not too much oil.

9. Make a frosting. Whisk the ingredients from glaze to smooth consistency, adding more milk if necessary.

10. DIP and enjoy. Dip the hot donuts in the frosting. Let the excess turn off, then place them on a rack to cool. Serve hot and enjoy!

Advice for the best donuts Krispy Kreme

The first time you try Krispy Kreme Copycat donuts, they may not be 100% perfect. It’s good! My tips and tricks will help you lower the process.

  • Hot things correctly. Use a digital thermometer to make sure that water and milk are between 105 and 115 degrees. This is important for perfectly activated yeast.
  • Avoid a sticky situation. If the dough feels too sticky after the petrin, I add flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Avoid using too much flour to maintain a smooth paste.
  • Need a hot place to go up? Place the dough in the oven (off) with the closed door. (You can also place a bowl of hot water nearby.) This will create a hot upright environment without trading.
  • Look at the temperature. Use a power supply thermometer to maintain 375 stable degrees for a frying. Adjust the heat between the lots if necessary. In addition, work in small lots to prevent overcrowding and the decline in temperature.
  • Take a fry test. Fry a donut hole first to confirm the temperature of the oil and the frying time.
  • No dry active yeast? Replace half the weight of the instant yeast or double the weight of the fresh yeast. Add them with the other dry ingredients.
  • Abandon excess oil. After the frying, drain the donuts on paper towels for at least 1 minute to remove excess oil. Then place them on a grid on parchment paper (or a tray) for easy cleaning after glazing.

Variations and substitutions

I have experienced a lot with this recipe, and there are a lot of tasty variations that you can try to make these donuts. Here are some of my favorite ways to change things.

  • Suffer them. A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg in the dough will give these donuts a phenomenal taste. You can also try the pepper of the never, apple pie spices or pumpkin spices!
  • Vary the frosting. Standard vanilla frosting is not your only option. Try chocolate frosting or maple or coffee. This slowly tangy strawberry frosting is another excellent option. You can also replace your favorite extract (ie almond) with the vanilla recipe in glaze.
  • For my chocolate lovers. Mix a little cocoa powder with the other dry ingredients. Chocolate donuts for victory!
  • Try a healthy turn. Cook the donuts in the oven at 375 degrees for about 10-11 minutes until they are a beautiful golden brown color.
  • Add a delicious garnish. I don’t know about you, but the filled donuts are my favorites! Just cut larger laps and do not make a central hole. Then fill them with dough cream, jam or even lemon curd! You can also add a small lemon zest to the dough for a citrus kick.

Do not forget to save your remains! Fry the donut holes and use remaining leftovers to make smaller donuts. (Or funny twisted forms!)

How to store

Do you have remaining donuts? Take advantage the next day and beyond by following my easy storage tips.

To do in advance: Prepare the dough and cut the donuts the day before. Place them on a tray-lined tray and refrigerate overnight. Bring to room temperature before frying to make sure they are uniformly cooked.

To store: Keep the remains of donuts in an airtight container at room temperature up to 24 hours. Keep them in the refrigerator overnight or up to 3 days.

To freeze: Place the donuts in a single layer on a waxed paper baking sheet. Gent to firmness (about 2 to 3 hours). Then transfer them to a bag or a container of a tight freezer. Separate the layers with waxed paper and freeze up to 2 months. Déagel at room temperature or microwave for 8 seconds when ready to take advantage of it.

To warm up: For a quick warm-up, I microwave each donut for 8 seconds to restore its soft and fresh texture. Or, you can use an oven set at 350 degrees for about 5 minutes. (Better if you warm several donuts at a time.)
